Hop, Hope,
Insect, Inspect,
Lumber, Slumber,
Utter, Butter
The man’s slumber was short and not too sweet, and any hope that he had for a rest was over. With a hop, skip and jump he went back to work. His job was to inspect lumber for a strange and dangerous insect. The moth from the tropics laid eggs in a kind of frothy butter. Once hatched these larvae would eat through indigenous trees. His job was to destroy the parents. He did not utter a word.

The youngest of the four daughters, of the man who managed the local docks, sat still. She was admiring the newest buds on the forty apple trees, in her grandfather’s orchard. She wished she had brought her spectacles, for she was mesmerised by the antics of a small snail. A shimmering silver trail was the clue to where the snail had been. There was no clue as to where it was going. Suddenly, a magpie swooped and ate the snail. The girl was sad.

The Kidnap Place
The ridge was clearly visible from the kitchen, if one sat on the metal chair. However, when the fridge door was left open, the view of the bridge was obscured. I saw a single oat lying on the outside of my plate. On the wall there was an intricate picture of a goat . It was all I could remember of the kidnap place.
